Week 4 Module

Internet Basics and the History of the Internet

In this week, we will cover the history of the internet and why it was created. We will journey back into the late 1960's and discover the tensions that existed between Russia and the United States, which led to the Cold War that stretched for decades ( 1960's to 1991). What began as a friendship between the United States and Russia during World War 2, ended in mistrust  and a broken relationship after the war.

The Cold War was a battle between two completely different economic ideas, such as Capitalism and Communism  Both countries wanted to expand their economic systems  and  level of influence on other countries in the world. This led to wars, such as Vietnam and Korean Wars, as these countries battled it out to keep their influence on those distant countries.

Additionally, each country wanted out-perform one other when it came to the development of nuclear weapons. This led to the nuclear arms race, as these countries competed with each other, with the aim of becoming the world's number one superpower. On the space front, both countries were also competing with each other to put a man on the moon, with Russia having the advantage of having the first cosmonaut and satellite  in orbit.

In this module, we will cover why the tensions between the United States and Moscow led to the creation of the internet. Stay tuned.
