Summary of the History of Computers
Summary of the History of Computers
The history of a computer dates back to 1936. The first computer was a calculator. Through experimentation, and because technology builds upon itself, milestones in computer processing have been made. Technology has made space exploration possible and simplified our everyday lives. At the press of a button, a radio wave with coded instructions of 0's and 1's is sent to a rocket's computer system, engaging the rocket's boosters. Today's computers are technological marvels in what they can accomplish. The first computer in the 1930's, however, was very limited in its functions and was the size of a computer desk.

The 1930's and 1940's saw the creation of a binary system, in which computers use 0's and 1's to perform operations. Parallel processing was also introduced. This gave computers the ability to run two programs at the same time. The first form of memory also became available. Transistors were also created and put into computers. They allowed these primitive computers to process information. A transistor is "a device which converts sound waves into electrical waves" (iCEV, n.d.). Transistors also play a critical role in "controlling electrical currents" in a motherboard (iCEV, n.d.). The mother board is a circuit board that allows the central processing unit, or the brains of the computer, to communicate with input and output devices, like the monitor, keyboard, and printer.

In 1952, a computer by the name of UNIVAC was used to "count ballets in Presidential Elections" (iCEV, n.d.). The first computer chip was also created in 1952. It only had one transistor. "Today's computers can hold up to 125 million transistors in a chip that is the size of a penny"(iCEV, n.d.). This gives computers the ability to perform millions of calculations a second.

In the 1960's, the United States government wanted a way to communicate with other governmental agencies, in the event of a national emergency. As a result, ARPAnet was created. ARPAnet started off as a system of 4 computers in 4 states that could communicate with each other. Over they years, ARPAnet grew into a vast network of computers. This vast network of computers would eventually lead to the creation of the internet.

In the 1970's, Steve Wozniak created the first personal computer kit called the Apple 1. He would later "team up with Steve Jobs" to create the Apple Corporation (iCEV, n.d.).

The 1980's was a period of robust growth for the computer industry. Many important people, like Bill Gates, and Michael Dell came into the picture. Bill Gates, a Harvard dropout, went on to create the Microsoft Corporation. Micheal Dell created Dell Computers in Austin, Texas. Dell Computers, in 2004, had the greatest market share in the computer industry. This means that more computers were sold by Dell than any other competitor.

In the 1990's, the World Wide Web came into existence when a man by the name of Tim Berners Lee "developed a way to convert text in a document into web pages" (iCEV, n.d). This is called Hypertext Markup Language, or HTML. HTML is a language code that "allows videos, graphics, and text" to be displayed on a computer monitor (iCEV, n.d). During the 1990's, computer processing power began to grow exponentially. In 1993, for example, "Intel released its Pentium Processor, which has over 1 million transistors (iCEV, n.d.). In contrast, one of the very first computers only had one transistor (iCEV, n.d.).

In the 21 first Century, one of the focuses of the computer industry has been on microminiaturization. This is the process of making computer "chips smaller and more powerful" (iCEV, n.d.). Today, the advancements on computers have allowed virtual reality to become possible. Artificial intelligence is also now possible with what is called "system learning." Super computers are now able to process billions of calculations per second and can help predict the weather. Cellphones have made digital cameras and MP3 players obsolete.

Tim Berners Lee developed the Hypertext Markup Language, which gave way to the creation of the internet. HTTP also allows computers to access web pages that are stored in servers throughout the world.

The lines of a circuit board can be compared to highways This is where electrical impulses travel from different components of the motherboard, like the hard drive to random access memory, where the information becomes available for the CPU to process.

Today, one of the newest emerging technologies is augmented reality. Augmented reality helps create a mix of reality with computer generated graphics. This is made possible when a user puts on a helmet or glasses with these kinds of technologies.

Cellphones have been around since the 1970's and were extremely bulky when they first came out. Cellphones, these days, have made MP3 players, camcorders, and cameras obsolete, since cellphones have now taken over these functions. In addition to these functions, cellphones can now stream movie videos and run computer programs, which seemed impossible in the early 2000's.

One of the newest emerging technologies is artificial intelligence. This is the ability of a computer to think like a human through machine learning. Machine learning is exposing a computer to a set of data. This enables a computer to make predictions about how to respond to certain situations.
